The Universal Synod Reaches Halfway Point

Published on October 16, 2024

The second assembly of the Universal Synod on Synodality has now passed its halfway point and there has been much news coming from the press conferences, video content, and live-streamed prayer services.  In an attempt to keep you updated with all of the great work which h is taking place in our Church at this time we offer the following links.  We hope you can spend a little time learning about the Synod deliberations.

For those who missed the Penitential Service on 1st October, the full service can be found here.  On Friday, 11th October the Synod participants celebrated an Ecumenical Prayer Vigil in the Square of the Roman Protomartyrs, which was presided over by Pope Francis.  According to tradition, this is where the martyrdom of St. Peter took place.  You can watch the full prayer service by clicking here.  A corresponding service was held at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny on the same evening.

A further initiative from this assembly has been the public forums.  Two “Theological-Pastoral Forums” took place on Wednesday afternoon, 9th October.  Both of them can viewed online on Vatican News’ YouTube channel or by clicking on the titles here: “The People of God, subject of the Mission” and “The Role and Authority of the Bishop in a Synodal Church.”  Two more forums will be held later and may be livestreamed by Vatican News.

Both Vatican News and the Universal Synod Office have plenty more video content online, including a recent video short with Irish sister Mary T Barron, OLA, who is there representing the religious superiors.  Sr. Mary’s video on the role of women at the Synod is available here: Sr. Barron.  Much more content can be accessed on Vatican News’ Playlist and Synod.va’s Playlist.
